Financial Considerations

Transplant Financial Services

The Transplant financial team is here to assist you with your financial needs throughout the transplant process. The cost of Transplant surgery, which includes evaluation and follow up care, varies from patient to patient. You need to know how much of the cost of your transplant care will be paid by your insurance, and how much you will be responsible for.

Before your transplant evaluation is scheduled you will be assigned a Patient Finance Associate who will be your financial contact throughout the entire transplant process. They will require information from you regarding your insurance coverage and other demographic information. It is helpful if you have already identified an insurance case manager. Our Finance Associate will work closely with your case manager to understand what benefits are available for your transplant and to coordinate those benefits.

Information requested from your insurance includes but is not limited to the following:

  • Effective date of insurance coverage
  • Deductible amounts
  • Co-insurance or other insurance supplements
  • Pre-certification requirements
  • Drug and Laboratory work coverage
  • Organ / tissue procurement coverage (Charges for organ or tissue recovery and transportation of those to the University of Miami / Jackson Memorial Hospital)
  • Patient transportation coverage, if required
  • Rehabilitation benefits, if needed

Your Patient Financial Associate will keep in close communication with your transplant medical coordinator. When your financial status is approved, you will be contacted for scheduling of your evaluation with the Transplant medical team.

After your visits to the Miami Transplant Institute begin, you may start to receive separate information or bills from the University of Miami Medical Group, and also from Jackson Memorial Hospital. The University of Miami is the physician practice group, and Jackson Memorial Hospital represents the facility. The hospital and physician practices are separate from each other, with separate billing departments. The physician practice will bill for services provided by doctors and staff. The hospital will bill for use of its facilities and services. Knowing the difference may help avoid confusion when you begin receiving statements or bills.

As a transplant patient you have a very important role in the financial aspect of your transplant care. You have the responsibility to know your available insurance benefits, and to review the statements or bills sent to you. You also have the responsibility to inform your Patient Financial Associate immediately of any changes to your insurance coverage, or any additional coverage you may obtain. This is extremely important to assure your claims are paid properly.
